Modern-day Melbourne was first settled in 1867, after the civil war, and went largely undeveloped for 10 years when new settlers arrived. The area, which was then known as Crane Creek, received the name Melbourne in honor of the first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector who was from Melbourne, Australia.
